SAFEF’s Annual Trade Members’ Meeting, which was held virtually on 7 December 2021, was attended by 20 representatives from 13 Trade Member and 4 Associate Member Companies.

Members were updated on SAFEF’s past year’s activities. These included Virtual SG Farmers’ Markets to promote local produce; webinars and workshops to facilitate capability building and technology matching; as well as participation in numerous external work groups, focus groups and committees to contribute feedback and advice on a wide range of industry-related issues.

SAFEF also announced its upcoming initiatives. These include embarking on a nutritional or contaminant study of local produce vs imported produce; engaging local produce supporters to be advocates of local produce; and providing pro bono advisory service to Members.

The event was graced by Guest-of-Honour, Mr Desmond Tan, Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, who delivered the Keynote Address. Minister Desmond Tan also answered many industry-related questions during the Q&A Session.

Smart Farming: From Dream to Reality

SAFEF and its Associate Member, SPTel, held a Webinar on “Smart Farming – From Dream to Reality” on 2 December 2021 to share insights with SAFEF Members on how they can leverage technology to turn their farms into unmanned, smart, self-regulating farms with sensors and Internet of Things (IoT).

The webinar enabled participants to learn about the benefits that IoT can deliver for their farms, and how a smart farm has successfully deployed sensors and is using data for process automation. There was also a live demonstration of SPTel’s IOT-as-a-Service Solution in action together with a hydroponics set-up at SPTel’s Innovation Hub.

The Webinar was attended by 24 participants from 16 companies. A poll conducted at the end of the Webinar showed that more than 90% of the respondents rated the Webinar “Good” or “Excellent” as they saw the relevance and potential benefits of the solutions to their farms.

Agri-Food Cluster Transformation Fund Briefing

Description:

SAFEF invited Singapore Food Agency to give a briefing on the Agri-Food Cluster Transformation (ACT) Fund on 11 November 2021.

Attended by 25 participants from 22 companies via Zoom, participants learnt what the ACT Fund covers, eligibility for fund support, how to apply for the grant via the Business Grants Portal (BGP), and the related timelines for the Capability Upgrading (CU), Innovation & Test-bedding (I&T) and Technology Upscaling (TU) components of the Fund.  Farms looking to upgrade capabilities, conduct R&D and/or invest in new infrastructure learnt that they could potentially benefit from funding grants of close to $7 million.

A poll of the participants conducted at the close of the event drew a higher than 90% response rate with all respondents agreeing that they found the briefing useful.

Virtual Agritech Sourcing Mission to Israel

Enterprise Singapore, Republic Polytechnic and SAFEF co-organised a 2nd Virtual Agritech Sourcing Mission on 26 October 2021, this time to Israel.

The Mission introduced Singapore growers to The Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce and 5 agritech solution providers from Israel that are keen to partner Singapore enterprises on their farming and/or co-innovation journeys: Agridera, Argos, BreedX, Hazera, Vertical Field.

With a focus on indoor vertical and greenhouse farming, the Mission featured presentations that help farmers explore new and high value plant varieties optimised for indoor/vertical farming, and plant growth methods for higher yield.

Attended by around 60 participants of which close to 35% were from SAFEF’s farming community, a poll conducted at the end of the Mission showed that around 80% of the respondents rated the Mission “Good” or “Excellent” as they saw the potential of these solutions benefiting their farms.

Virtual Agritech Sourcing Mission to USA

SAFEF Members had the opportunity to attend the first-ever Virtual Agritech Sourcing Mission to USA, which was co-organised by Enterprise Singapore, Republic Polytechnic and SAFEF.

Held on 26 October 2021, the Mission enabled Singapore’s indoor/greenhouse growers to source for ready solutions from the US that can help Singapore growers to adopt automation, energy efficient alternative light sources and cooling systems, plant growth methods for higher yield, and explore new plant varieties for indoor/vertical farming.

Attended by around 60 participants of which close to 35% were from SAFEF’s farming community, the Mission featured presentations on agritech solutions from 5 US solutions providers: Agnetix, Agritecture, Green Automation, Heilux, Vindara.

A poll conducted at the end of the Mission showed that more than 90% of the respondents rated the Mission “Good” or “Excellent” as they saw the potential of these solutions benefiting their farms.

SAFEF held yet another Technology-Matching Webinar on 16 September 2021. Attended by 25 participants from 20 organisations, the Webinar featured presentations by 2 of SAFEF’s Associate Members:

  • Singapore Polytechnic – Food Innovation & Resource Centre: “For Vegetable Produce: Shelf Life Extension through Packaging Materials & Techniques, and Conversion to More Value-Added Products through Moisture Removal, Flavour & Texture Development”
  • Republic Polytechnic: “Shelf Life Extension of Fresh Produce Using Controlled Oxygen in the Storage Chamber”, and “Distributed Ledger Technology Application to Manage Food Supply Chain”
